Wheelchair Evaluations
Wheelchair Evaluations and Letters of Medical Necessity
People think getting a wheelchair is as easy as buying a car. Wheelchairs are customized equipment. Each user has specific needs that are identified during the functional mobility assessment. The assessment is conducted by professionals who are specifically trained in identifying medical needs and then selecting the wheelchair and features that will provide the best solutions. Our goal is to complete written assessment reports within 3 business days of the evaluation appointment, which is well below the industry average.
Wheelchair Evaluations and Letters of Medical Necessity are currently available in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and Maryland.
The Process
The functional mobility assessment provides an overall look at how a person functions and if there are any limitations. The assessment occurs at your home and lasts approximately 1-1.5 hours. Present at the assessment is the therapist (OT or PT), the ATP (assistive technology professional), caregivers (if applicable), and you. To expedite the process and make sure everyone can attend, the therapist often attends remotely via Telemed. The ATP is the representative from the wheelchair company and will provide information related to the wheelchair. The therapist will provide medical knowledge and information on how you function and accommodate any limitations.
At the completion of the assessment, the therapist writes the report and the letter of medical necessity (LMN). The LMN justifies medically why the wheelchair and its features are needed. We strive to get the report completed within 3 business days of the evaluation. The LMN documents are then signed by your doctor and sent to the wheelchair company to continue the process of getting your wheelchair.
